Een voormalig mono georienteerd arbeidershuisje zonder buitenruimte, genesteld in het historische centrum van Gent, wordt een nieuwe thuis. Er is afstand gedaan van een teveel aan bezittingen en op de kleine ruimte gezocht naar de essentie. De ruimtes zijn op maat en gepositioneerd volgens de functie en de lichttoetreding. De woning is integraal toegankelijk waarbij alle functies van het wonen op het gelijkvloers zijn gebracht (36m2). Een alkoof situeert zich op de donkerste plek van de huis maar door de koppeling aan de badkamer ontstaat een soort van suite.

Er is getracht om een maximale ruimtelijkheid te creëren en hierin het licht optimaal te laten spelen. Alle woonfuncties zijn op het gelijkvloers gecondenseerd. De andere niveaus bevatten de ruimtes voor de kinderen en een dak-atelier voor Lizzy Pauwels.
Via een glazen dak ontstaat er een orangerie die zo het gebrek aan private buitenruimte compenseert. Het licht laten we vervolgens via een aaneenschakeling van vides tot het gelijkvloers doordringen. Van onderuit fungeren deze als een Napolitaanse straat en maken ze het mogelijk om van aan de keukentafel de lucht of de sterren te zien.
Het is een zintuiglijke woning met aandacht voor materialiteit die doorheen de tijd zal evolueren.

A former mono-oriented workers’ house without outdoor space, nestled in the historic center of Ghent, becomes a new home. Excess possessions are relinquished and the essence is sought in the small space.The spaces are tailor-made and positioned according to the function and light entry. The ground floor (36m2) already contains a complete house where it is possible to live with a wheelchair. An alcove is located in the darkest place in the house, but the connection to the bathroom creates a kind of suite.

An attempt has been made to create maximum spaciousness and to allow the light to play optimally. All residential functions are condensed on the ground floor. The other levels contain children’s areas and a roof studio.
A glass roof creates an orangery that compensates for the lack of private outdoor space. We then allow the light to penetrate to the ground floor through a series of voids. From below, these act like a Neapolitan street and make it possible to see the sky or the stars from the kitchen table. It is a sensory home with attention to materiality that will evolve over time.
