Camino is een groepswoning voor mensen met een beperking in Bottelaere (Merelbeke), die inzet op het scheppen van een genormaliseerde woonomgeving in een randstedelijke context. Na de sloop van een eensgezinswoning ontstaat er ruimte voor vier woonunits.
Samen met de bouwheer wordt volop ingezet op de sterke betrokkenheid van de bewoners bij het bouwen van hun huis en tuin. Dit vormt een bijzondere en doorlopende constante doorheen het project. Op verschillende geijkte momenten wordt de volledige leefkring en familie van de bewoners uitgenodigd en worden de toekomstige gebruikers samen met hun omgeving persoonlijk betrokken bij de wording van hun nieuwe thuis. Er wordt telkenmale de tijd genomen door Christoforus, ons en de aannemer om de gedane werken duidelijk toe te lichten en de volgende stappen te duiden. Op één van de werfvergadering wordt tijdens een collectief moment, als symbolische daad, een zadeldak als referentie naar de originele eensgezinswoning het plan van de half-open bebouwing Dodekaeder (twaalfvlak) door de toekomstige bewoners begraven in de fundering.
Hoewel het in eerste instantie een woning betreft heeft de doelgroep specifieke eisen. Deze worden zowel in ontwerp als in uitwerking meegenomen als deel van het geheel en vormen geen finale optelsom bij het wonen.
Hoewel uitgebreid met de specifieke zorgfunctie is Camino is in eerste instantie een huis, een thuis. In de detaillering van de materialisatie gaan we op zoek naar deze huiselijkheid. Het pand wordt opgetrokken in vrij traditionele materialen van warm rode gevelstenen en wolkgrijze leien. Aan de binnenzijde vullen we het kleurpallet verder aan met zacht rozerood.
Bouwen binnen een randstedelijke context
De bouwplaats is gelegen binnen de dorpskern van de deelgemeente Bottelare, in het woonlint langsheen de Sint-Annastraat. De on- middellijke omgeving wordt gekenmerkt door een verweving van woon- en kleinhandelsfuncties binnen een gevarieerd bebouwingspatroon. De nieuwe groepswoning wordt – naar analogie met de te slopen woning – eveneens opgebouwd uit twee bouwlagen onder zadeldak en gaat zo op in het straatbeeld.
De architectuur wil meewerken aan de visie die de Christoforusgemeenschap inneemt over het samenwonen en een ‘omgekeerde integratie’. Via een trage wegel op het naburig plot wordt de tuin toegankelijk voor de buurt.

Camino is a group home for people with disabilities in Bottelaere (Merelbeke), which is committed to creating a standardized living environment in a peripheral urban context. After the demolition of a single-family home, space is created for four residential units.

Together with the builder, the strong involvement of the residents in the construction of their house and garden is fully exploited. This forms a special and continuous constant throughout the project. The entire community and family of the residents will be invited at various calibrated moments and the future users will be personally involved in the creation of their new home together with their surroundings. Each time, Christoforus, us and the contractor took the time to clearly explain the work done and the next steps. At one of the site meetings, during a collective moment, as a symbolic act, a saddle roof as a reference to the original single-family house, the plan of the half-open building Dodekaeder (dodecahedron) was buried in the foundation by the future residents.

Although primarily residential, the target group has specific requirements. These are included both in design and elaboration as part of the whole and do not form a final sum in living.
Although extended with the specific care function, Camino is primarily a house, a home. In the detailing of the materialization, we look for this homeliness. The building is constructed in fairly traditional materials of warm red bricks and cloud-gray slates. On the inside, we are supplementing the color palette with soft pinkish red.

Building within a suburban context
The building site is located within the village center of the municipality of Bottelare, in the residential ribbon along Sint-Annastraat. The immediate surroundings are characterized by an interweaving of residential and retail functions within a varied building pattern. By analogy with the home that is to be demolished, the new group home will also consist of two stories under a pitched roof, thus blending into the streetscape.

The architecture wants to contribute to the vision that the Christoforus Community has about living together and “reverse integration”. The garden is accessible to the neighborhood via a slow lane on the neighboring plot.
