JJ HOUSE

De rijwoning is gelegen in de Machariuswijk in het cen-trum van Gent op één van de oudste en meest gelaagde plekken in de stad, naast de Sint-Baafsabdij en het voormalige slachthuis. De bewoners hadden de kans om een aanpalende woning bij te kopen en zo een decompressie in dit dichte weefsel realiseren. Deze nieuwe opportuniteit bood hen dezelfde mogelijkheden in de stad die we normaal enkel sub-urbaan kunnen vinden. Aan de straatzijde hebben we minimale ingrepen aan  de facade gedaan, zodat de bestaande gevelritme in destraat behouden bleef. De gevel is een belangrijk themavoor ons daar het enige deel van de woning is die tot het publieke behoort. De gelijkvloers hebben we open-getrokken doormiddel van een betonnen kruisvormige structuur die zowel de achtergevels als de gemene muren draagt. Deze ter plaatse gestorte structuur verdeeld de ruimte in 4 evenwaardige kwadranten: leefruimte, keuken, eetruimte, buitenruimte. Het plan is een modernistische interpretatie van een 19de eeuws huis (of omgekeerd). Het hele huis is opgevat rond een openaanneenschakeling van zeer specifiekeruimtes, sferen (al dan niet versterkt door kleuren) en doorzichten. In de buitenruimte die impliciet als kamer van het huis kangezien worden, vervaagd de grens tussen binnen en buiten. We behouden maar herinterpreteren de diversestallingen en bindbeugels die in gebruik waren ten tijde van het slachthuis. Maar ook de oude schouw van de voormalige stookplaats wordt een sculptuur in de tuin.

The row house is located in the Macharius neighborhood in the centrum of Ghent on one of the oldest and most layered sites in the city, next to St. Bavo’s Abbey and the former slaughterhouse. The residents had the opportunity to purchase an adjoining house on the side and thus realize a decompression in this dense fabric. This new opportunity offered them the same opportunities in the city that we can normally only find suburban. On the street side, we made minimal interventions to the facade, preserving the existing façade rhythm in the street. The facade is an important theme for us since it is the only part of the house that belongs to the public. We opened up the ground floor by means of a concrete cross-shaped structure that carries both the rear facades and the common walls. This on-site poured structure divides the space into 4 equal quadrants: living space, kitchen, dining space, outdoor space. The plan is a modernist interpretation of a 19th century house (or vice versa). The whole house is conceived around an open-plan arrangement of very specific spaces, atmospheres (reinforced or not by colors) and vistas. In the outdoor space that can be implicitly seen as a room of the house, the boundary between inside and outside is blurred. We preserve but reinterpret the various stalls and tie-bars that were in use at the time of the slaughterhouse. But also the old fireplace of the former boiler room becomes a sculpture in the garden.
